Earlier this year I reviewed the Triumph stroller from Maclaren. I really liked the Triumph stroller because of it’s unique attributes. It’s a well built super lightweight umbrella stroller that has a reclining seat. This is a great stroller – especially for parents who find themselves with a napping child in the middle of a stroll.

Today I am reviewing the Twin Triumph stroller and I am once again finding the same great characteristics. The Twin Triumph stroller is manufactured by Maclaren who is known for their lightweight, compact and durable products.

Let me tell you a little bit about Maclaren. This stroller manufacturing company was founded by Mr. Maclaren, an aeronautical engineer, who used to design the under carriages, the retracting wheels, for British fighter planes in WWII. Maclaren ‘invented’ foldable / portable umbrella strollers. I really like Maclaren strollers because when you take an aeronautical approach to manufacturing, you use great materials and great engineering. The end result is… you get great, high quality, ultra-light, strollers.

Key Features

The Twin Triumph stroller has independent reclining seats. This is a great feature that you would not typically find in a lightweight umbrella stroller. Both seats can be positioned fully upright or fully reclined and because the seats are independent, one child can be lying down taking a nap while his or her sibling is sitting up and taking in the view.

The water-resistant canopy protects your children from direct sunlight but, unfortunately, the canopy is not very big and can not provide adequate coverage if it starts to rain. Luckily, the Twin Triumph stroller comes with a rain cover that completely encloses your children.

The Twin Triumph stroller has a lightweight all-aluminum frame which makes it easy for parents to maneuver and transport their stroller. Talking about maneuverability, the Twin Triumph can turn on a dime which is significant given that it’s a double stroller. Another key aspect of maneuverability is how the Twin Triumph handles crowds. This side-by-side twin stroller is actually not that wide. It’s the perfect width to easily fit through doorways and because it’s not too wide, strolling in grocery stores or on crowded streets is not as difficult as one would think.

The Maclaren Volo stroller is an ultra-light, umbrella stroller that’s built to last – I know, I’ve owned one for several years. I went through numerous inexpensive umbrella strollers before I stumbled upon the Volo stroller. Other strollers use cheap frame material, cheap bolts, cheap seating material and they use cheap plastic.  This is not the case with the Volo stroller, in fact this stroller from Maclaren is the exact opposite – Maclaren uses top-notch materials throughout their strollers. A bit about the manufacturer Maclaren… Maclaren strollers are built in England, they have been building strollers for over 40 years. The founder, Owen Maclaren, actually invented the first lightweight umbrella stroller. Prior to building strollers, being an aeronautical engineer, Mr. Maclaren designed the under-carriages for high performance aircraft… no wonder Maclaren builds such great strollers.

Key Features

The Volo stroller is a dream to fold & carry, store, or transport. The fold process takes seconds and can be accomplished easily with one hand. I kick a lever on the frame with my foot and I pull up on the carry strap. The Volo stroller automatically closes in a locked, ready to carry, position. Since I have the carry strap in hand I continue to lift the stroller… the carry strap gets draped over my shoulder and off we go. The stroller unfold process is just as easy to accomplish.

Earlier I mentioned the quality of the materials that Maclaren uses to build their strollers – let me elaborate. I’m not an expert when it comes to materials, I can’t tell the difference between nylon, rayon, or rip stop materials., but I can tell you that the material that Maclaren uses on their stroller canopies and seats looks great, reviewers say that they like the “vibrant colors”, and the material looks and feels quite durable. I’ve owned my Volo stroller for over 4 years and the seat & canopy look brand new.

Maclaren also uses amazingly lightweight aluminum tubing for the stroller’s frame and this tubing is very strong. When combined with a great construction process… Maclaren builds strollers that last for years.

The Volo stroller is Maclaren’s lightest stroller – it weighs less than 9 pounds. One would think, however, given that it’s such a lightweight stroller, that you’d have to be careful not to over-load it. Most strollers’ maximum carrying capacity is 40 pounds – this is true for both umbrella strollers and standard strollers alike. The Volo, however, can carry up to 55 pounds!

It should come as no surprise that a lightweight & sturdy umbrella stroller has great maneuverability. You can push the Volo stroller with one hand and you can literally turn it on a dime. The wheels can swivel that gives your great maneuverability and the wheels can be locked straight – which is ideal when strolling over uneven surfaces such as gravel. Our Verdict?

For the price, the Maclaren Twin Techno is one of the sturdier, feature rich strollers you’ll find on the market.  If you are looking for a stroller that is safe and comfortable for two infants or toddlers, you can’t go wrong with this stroller system.  All in all, most reviews and comments from customers give this stroller a thumbs up for it construction, easy use, and long-term satisfaction.

We all know about the full-featured strollers – they have extra comfort, lots of storage space, nice pockets and cup holders. We also know about the lightweight umbrella strollers’ lack of features with the trade-off being the weight and maneuverability.

Too bad they don’t make a hybrid stroller… well perhaps they do with the Triumph stroller from Maclaren. Frame / weight

Made from lightweight aluminum, the Triumph stroller, like other umbrella strollers, is easy to maneuver and transport. The quality of the materials that Maclaren uses, however, sets itself apart from the rest. Their strollers are sturdy and strong – built to last for years.

Handles

Maclaren engineers worked overtime to design the Triumph’s handles. Maclaren features an ergonomic design – the padded handles are comfortable for strolling regardless of the parent’s height. You won’t get lower backaches from slouching / bending over when strolling with the Triumph.

Seat

Dial-in your angle of recline with the Triumph stroller’s adjustable seat. Most umbrella strollers don’t have reclining seats, so to compare the Triumph’s seat one must look at standard-sized strollers. Unlike the standard-sized strollers that typically have 4 levels of recline, the Triumph stroller has an adjustable mechanism that provides 90 degrees of recline.

Canopy

The canopy for the Triumph stroller provides fundamental coverage for your child.  The water-resistant canopy keeps the direct sunlight off your child but being a lightweight stroller, the canopy is not very big. If the weather takes a turn for the worse, the Triumph stroller comes equipped with a rain cover that completely encloses your child – keeping him or her out of the rain.

Wheels / suspension

One of the key advantages of a lightweight umbrella stroller is its maneuverability. These strollers literally turn on a dime. The small plastic wheels aren’t great for bumpy off-street strolling – but given their ability to either lock straight or swivel, what you don’t get in comfort, it makes up for with its maneuverability.

Fold / transport

Why do parents buy umbrella strollers? Yes having a highly maneuverable stroller makes it easy to get around in a crowd, but what really sets umbrella strollers apart from other types of strollers is its ability to quickly and easily fold for transport or for storage. The Triumph stroller offers one of the best folding systems I’ve ever seen. In a three-step, five-second process, the Triumph stroller easily folds compact – to be thrown over your shoulder or thrown into your car’s trunk.

Brakes, safety harness

The brakes are easy to operate, a simply tap with your foot engages the linked parking brakes. The height of the 5-point safety harness is adjustable so you can safely and comfortably stroll with your child, up to 55 pounds, for years.

Summary

The Maclaren Triumph stroller is excellent for both daily use and, obviously, for traveling. This stroller, which is going to last for years, is ideal for families who need an easy to maneuver stroller and a stroller that quickly folds up for transport / storage.

Why do strollers have to be big and bulky in order to hold travel system car seats for infants? If you take the weight of your stroller and combine it with the weight of your infant car seat and the weight of your child, you’ll have a pretty heavy set up that would, most likely, be hard to maneuver. I personally think that a lightweight stroller should be invented to accommodate infant car seats. Think about it, you probably need the stroller weight-reduction the most when you’re using an infant car seat.

Enter Maclaren, a stroller manufacturer from England who is known for their leading edge designs, their high quality materials and their craftsmanship. Maclaren’s Techno XLR lightweight stroller weighs 16.5 lbs, folds up quite nicely and is easy to carry… and it’s compatible with several top-brand infant car seats! What a great idea.

There are a several things that I like about the Techno XLR stroller:

The materials that Maclaren uses are of high quality – their strollers wear very well. For example the canopy that comes standard on the Techno XLR is made of a sturdy material that’s easy to clean – and it looks great. The canopy, which is UV protected, also has a clear window that is perfectly positioned so moms and dads can easily keep an eye on their little ones.

The stroller seat is plush and roomy – your child will indeed be in the lap of luxury in this seat. In addition to being able to accommodate infant car seats, the Techno XLR stroller seat has four reclining positions. I can’t say enough about the ergonomic, height adjustable handles – it makes strolling comfortable for parents too. With this kind of stroller, you’ll find yourself inventing reasons to get out.

Is it raining and you’re getting cooped up?  No problem here, the Tecno XLR transparent rain cover is really cool. It clips on snuggly to the front of the stroller and completely covers the seating area. It could be windy and pouring rain and your little one would have a front row seat to the elements while staying warm, dry and cozy in his or her stroller seat.

As a reviewer I find it difficult to be unbiased because I’m a big Maclaren fan.
